Tenstellium is part playground, part exhibition space, part teaching tool, and part experiment.
After growing up online as a CompuServe sysop (the olden days!), the proprieter here, Gay Lyn Spencer (that's me),
learned a lot as a webmaster for the Conflict Management Division of The Academy of Management.
Having space here online to experiment seemed like a good idea then (about 1997), and it's been
a great place to learn and have fun ever since.
During the time web publishing began, I was running a little custom photographic printing company, Antares Images. That project has been in mothballs for years. However, photography will always be near and dear, so a bit of Antares Images stays alive here at Tenstellium. After professoring a few years, I leapt blindly from the ivory tower and became a computer programmer--doing VB and web application development (ASP and the like), and particularly focusing on database development. After becoming a Microsoft Certified Professional SQL Server Developer, I had the opportunity to combine teaching in my academic area (Management and Human Resources) and teaching database and web application topics, too! Why switch hats back and forth when you can wear two at once!? So, the mix here tends toward the eclectic, and you might find a few rather academic things alongside some *killer* chili recipes or a nifty piece of javascripting tucked behind a little web database application. There's quite a bit going on here, even though it might look a little quiet. You really should visit here several times--day after day--because the color scheme of the pages changes every day. No kidding. That's pretty much behind the scenes in VB Script, in other words, in server-side script. The VB Scripting makes the name of the cascading style sheet change according to the day, and that changes the looks. There are also some javascripts (client-side scripts) that work calendars and clocks and select the right date images, or whatever. Time is a theme. The dynamic stuff keeps things fresh around here. This is a good place to share some images, and I hope you take a minute to look at some and let me know what you think. A number of parts and pieces are under construction, so expect a few empty spaces and a few pieces that don't look like they quite belong with the rest. Some stuff is old, and the new stuff will hopefully replace it soon. My grandma was really devout at planting by the Moon and going fishing according to the almanac. In the Stargazing section, you can figure out moon signs and when the Moon is Void of Course. Decisions go awry when made when the Moon is Void of Course. It's a little thing on the page, but notice it tells you the date of the last New Moon was. The New Moon is the time for beginnings. It's a great bit of database work and VB Script... and reading the table is simple. The name, Tenstellium, is a bit of a creative astrological reference, too. Everyone is curious about that. If you're looking for something that used to be here or seems to have moved, please ask. I'd be glad to hear from you at antares@tenstellium.com. And if you want to talk about photographs or databases, that would be lots of fun. Truly, GLS 7/31/03 |
